Enterprise Project Management – Integrating Project and Program Management with Portfolio Management
The application of EPM (Enterprise Project Management) technology allows web based access and collaboration, and executive reporting to all the stakeholders of portfolio management and project and program management information. PPM technologies have both 0Portfolio and Project / Program Management capabilities—the best PPM technologies all employ a single database with robust security controls. See adjacent diagram. The left side illustrates multiple projects/ programs using a Tracking Gantt, man hour, and costs tied to the schedules- all bottom up best practices. The right side illustrates portfolio bubble charts, full time equivalent employee resources, and strategic objective categorization with risks. The bottom illustrates the use of a central document repository for corporate and project driven documents and records.
The capabilities, functionality, and ease of use have grown significantly since their early development in years 2000- 2002. For example, the bottom up utilization in the most popular project software tool, MS Project, can be deployed by using the best practices of dynamic scheduling with the MS Project standalone license, known as Project Standard. When enterprise wide planning, execution, and control is deemed a requirement, the MS Project Professional license upgrade and the EPM web based licensing applications [Windows Server, SQL database, and Project Server] can be deployed. The project and program managers are the client users of Project Professional and the enterprise wide information users—operations, purchasing, engineering, and others are the client users of Project Web Access (PWA) which is the equivalent of Internet Explorer for Project.
Portfolio management (top down) planning is in the same database where historical project and program management data resides and this data can be utilized to input into portfolio project families to improve the ability to plan the company portfolio.
